North of the Tropic of Capricorn | The Road to Nullagine | Out on Highway One | Outback Kid | The Big Sing | Way Out West
Highway One is the road you take if you want to see Australia. It's a road Joel Smoker has travelled on many times, beginning with the trip his mother and father took when they drove back with him to Fitzroy Crossing, from the little northwest port of Derby, where he was born.
Since then he has criss-crossed the country from north to south and east to west, a number of times and from those experiences has come a wealth of songs about Australia. These songs have been arranged in a song cycle that tells the story of a youth who leaves his home in regional Australia and goes out on the highway where he meets many different people and experiences the vagaries of life, eventually finding his way to that place that called home.
The songs are taken from Joel's three albums, Out On Highway One, Outback, and The Flesh And The Spirit all of which were produced by Lucky Oceans, the presenter of Radio National's The Daily Planet. The band includes Joel Smoker on guitar and vocals, Dave Clarke on fiddle, mandolin and harmonica, Rod Vervest on acoustic guitar, Owen Leggo on bass and Brendan Leggo on drums.
The show consists of two, one hour sets either side of a twenty minute interval. The performance can be augmented with an exhibition of Joel's cibachrome photographs from the Out on Highway One series.
