North of the Tropic of Capricorn is a multimedia presentation, incorporating a slide show, storytelling and songs, from Joel Smoker, that tells the story of two journeys: the first is the story of the Smoker family in the Kimberley region of Western Australia during the 1950s to the 1970s and the second is the story of Joel's time in the Kimberley during the 1980s. These two journeys are used to tell other stories, including the story of the changing face of European and Aboriginal relations, the role that faith can play in determining life's course and the inspiration for art. more >
Original songs by Joel Smoker are performed sitting down in what Joel describes as verandah music, that is, music that could be performed on the front verandah of places out there in regional Western Australia. Joel plays guitar and provides the lead vocals and he is joined in performance by Ian Simpson, singing harmony and playing guitar and banjo. more >
Highway One is the road that you take if you want to see Australia. It's a road Joel Smoker has travelled on many times, beginning with the trip his mother and father took when they drove back with him to Fitzroy Crossing, from the little northwest port of Derby, where he was born. more >
Outback Kid is a multimedia presentation incorporating a slide show, storytelling and songs, from Joel Smoker that tells his story of growing up in the Kimberley region of Western Australia during the 1950's to the 1970's. His story is used to tell a wider one; the story of the changing face of European and Aboriginal relations, from first contact to present times. more >
The Big Sing is a sing-along-concert for schools and communities. Joel and the Gospel Firebrands work with groups, coaching them in songs and music, culminating in a performance. more >
Joel Smoker has been traveling the back roads and dirt tracks of this big country for many years and from these journeys has come a wealth of songs about Australia. These songs have been recorded on Joel's four albums Out on Highway One, Outback, The Flesh and the Spirit and Smile as well as the The Road to Nullagine EP, all of which were produced by Lucky Oceans, the presenter of Radio National's The Planet. more >
